About 45,000 pieces of media are available in the Edlef Köppen Library in Genthin. The library has a wide variety of books and magazines, as well as electronic audio, video, music and books, all of which are available at computers located throughout the library. The library also hosts book readings, library tours and book launches. At the 825th anniversary celebration of the city of Genthin in 1996, the library was named to honour Genthin’s most famous citizen, Edlef Köppen, a German writer and radio editor. The novel “Heeresbericht” (Army Report), in which he wrote about his experiences in World War l, is his most famous novel. During the German Democratic Republic, the building was used as a district headquarters for the Free German Youth.
